Adam Szumer

1930-2006

Dearly loved Son of the Late Osias and Regina Szumer - Adam's life started in Jaslo Poland in 1930. He survived the Shoah, the Holocaust, and life under Soviet rule during the first few years of the war, September 1939 - June 1941 when the Nazi regime invaded Ukraine and Russia. As a teenager, he had to pack up and leave Poland, and set out across post war Europe with a few suitcases, like millions of other refugees, in search of better life in the other world, but not really knowing where or what that meant. His journey continued through Paris, New York, and eventually to arrive in Australia. Adam is survived by his wife Kayla Szumer; his three sons Nahum, Emmanuel and David and seven grandchildren.

Eulogies (pdf)

"Adam was one of the most generous, accepting, warm people that I knew. He never refused a compassionate ear or a warm word or a meal and a drink to share. And there was always the intelligent conversation about the latest books or theater or a movie, or the state of the world. Whenever time or distance moved us apart, he would not hesitate to reestablish the connection. We even shared an occasional meeting on the road in our world travels.

I will remember him most on our hikes through the bush that he loved so much, where conversation would move as freely as our legs, and there was a shared enjoyment of the wonders of nature around us, and stories about the people we knew, and the world we all inhabited.

Good-bye Adam. You have led a full and eventful life. Rest in peace." Pyotr Patrushev
